Reader discretion is advised.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All Australian children are guaranteed a place in public schools, and there\u2019s a near-universal enrolment rate across the country. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenscourt.nsw.gov.au\/childrens-court\/compulsory-schooling-orders\/compulsory-schooling-orders--children-and-young-people.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four million children were enrolled in school in 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 a legal requirement for parents who do not want to receive a fine.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australian schools fall under government and non-government (private) schools. Almost two-thirds of children are enrolled in government schools. The remaining third are enrolled in private schools, and this is where the bulk of school sexual abuse occurs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From emotional abuse, harassment and bullying to full-on child sexual abuse, the frequency of child abuse in private schools is downright disturbing \u2014 especially in Sydney NSW. Three-quarters of these survivors claimed to have been abused in non-government private schools.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commission heard stories about 1,069 schools, 55.8% of which were non-government schools. In most cases, there were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childabuseroyalcommission.gov.au\/schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cclusters\u201d of cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where a perpetrator (or perpetrators) would abuse multiple students over time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childabuseroyalcommission.gov.au\/schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">institutional factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were identified explaining the prevalence of sexual abuse and non-disclosure in private schools, including:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concern for the school\u2019s reputation and financial interests<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sense of being part of a superior\/privileged institution<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masculine or hierarchical cultures<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selection of ex-students as staff members<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-serving principals in governance structures with little to no accountability for student wellbeing<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-government schools are more likely to be boarding schools or to employ people from religious organisations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young students were groomed and abused in various locations, including the school grounds, at school activities in the community, and in other settings like a teacher&#8217;s home. The abuse wasn\u2019t just sexual, either \u2014 students were subjected to emotional maltreatment and abuse, bullying, harassment, social isolation and ridicule from both children and adults.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statistics are damning, and the stories are even worse.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><th><a href=\"#knox-grammar-school\">Knox Grammar School<\/a><\/th><th><a href=\"#the-scots-college\">The Scots College<\/a><\/th><\/tr><tr><th><a href=\"#sydney-grammar-school\">Sydney Grammar School<\/a><\/th><th><a href=\"#de-la-salle-revesby-heights\">De La Salle College Revesby Heights<\/a><\/th><\/tr><tr><th><a href=\"#waverley-college\">Waverley College<\/a><\/th><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"knox-grammar-school\"><strong>Knox Grammar School<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located in Wahroonga on Sydney\u2019s North Shore and founded in 1924, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/knox-grammar-school\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knox Grammar School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the leading independent Uniting Church school in NSW. According to their website, the school aims to teach students \u201cfaith, wisdom, integrity, compassion and courage, with a sure knowledge of who they are and how they should live\u201d.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tuition is $30,000+ per year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knox Grammar School was put under heavy scrutiny during the Royal Commission due to the sheer volume of child sexual abuse complaints lodged against them. Dr Paterson was the headmaster from 1969 to 1998, although the allegations of abuse span well over 30 years.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Royal Commission\u2019s report found that Dr Paterson was aware of sexual abuse claims involving former teachers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/paedophile-offenders\/adrian-nisbett\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adrian Nisbett<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Craig Treloar, Barrie Stewart and another unnamed staff member. Dr Paterson claimed he only knew about one instance of sexual abuse involving another teacher, Damien Vance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also noted that Dr Paterson was aware of an incident where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/former-knox-grammar-headmaster-ian-paterson-covered-up-abuse-royal-commission-finds-20160913-grewhi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a balaclava-clad man sexually assaulted a 14-year-old student in one of the school\u2019s dormitories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is suspected the offender was the resident dorm master, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childabuseroyalcommission.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/file-list\/Case%20Study%2023%20-%20Findings%20Report%20-%20Knox%20Grammar%20School.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Fotis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, this has never been proven.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Paterson\u2019s attitude towards sexual abuse allegations was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/former-knox-grammar-headmaster-ian-paterson-covered-up-abuse-royal-commission-finds-20160913-grewhi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">described as \u201cdismissive\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He failed to notify the parents of boys who made allegations of abuse and did not inform the school council of sexual abuse claims.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also \u201cdeliberately withheld information\u201d from a police officer who was investigating sexual abuse claims at the school.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A police task force formed in 2009 led to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytelegraph.com.au\/truecrimeaustralia\/police-courts-nsw\/sex-abuse-claims-exstudent-josh-newton-in-lawsuit-against-knox-grammar\/news-story\/0ea076fa5a0b7d15342c0015afe046f4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conviction of five former Knox Grammar School teachers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for sexually assaulting students between 1970 and 2009. Since then, dozens of abuse cases have been lodged against the school, most of which have been settled in court.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-scots-college\"><strong>The Scots College<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Scots College is one of Australia&#8217;s oldest and most respected Presbyterian boys\u2019 schools. They believe that \u201cyoung men discover true wisdom through reverence for God and faith in Jesus Christ\u201d, and their goal is to help each student \u201cdiscover his strength, develop his character, and pursue his God-given calling in the world\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tuition ranges from $10,000 to $40,000+ per year, depending on the type of enrollment (e.g. boarding, non-boarding, sibling discounts, etc.).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scots College pressed with questions about allegations of child sexual abuse<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/nijwam-swargiary-A0BWtsqPPZM-unsplash-Edited.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1068\" src=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/nijwam-swargiary-A0BWtsqPPZM-unsplash-Edited.png\" alt=\"boy in the outback\" class=\"wp-image-10848\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/nijwam-swargiary-A0BWtsqPPZM-unsplash-Edited.png 1600w, https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/nijwam-swargiary-A0BWtsqPPZM-unsplash-Edited-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/nijwam-swargiary-A0BWtsqPPZM-unsplash-Edited-1024x684.png 1024w, https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/nijwam-swargiary-A0BWtsqPPZM-unsplash-Edited-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/nijwam-swargiary-A0BWtsqPPZM-unsplash-Edited-1536x1025.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/A0BWtsqPPZM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsplash<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, a former math teacher from Scots College, John Joseph Beckett, was given a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/scots-college-sex-abuse-school-faces-allegations-it-failed-to-act-on-complaints-against-john-beckett-20150612-ghmuzn.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two-year suspended jail sentence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for indecently assaulting three boys on a three-week interstate excursion to Oodnadatta in the South Australian outback in 1989.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beckett led 13 of these trips during the 25 years he worked at Scots, from 1979 until 1999.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is alleged that Beckett would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/scots-college-sex-abuse-school-faces-allegations-it-failed-to-act-on-complaints-against-john-beckett-20150612-ghmuzn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sneak into the boys\u2019 beds at night and sexually assault them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile we were preparing to sleep, he approached to ask if I wanted help cooling down and started stroking me on the chest with the back of his hand,&#8221; one of the survivors said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Then he came back in the middle of the night and, without asking or anything, started stroking my chest again. Then he went down with his hand and did what he needed to do &#8230; fondling. He went away after I rolled over.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next morning, the boy asked to speak to Beckett privately and said, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/scots-college-sex-abuse-school-faces-allegations-it-failed-to-act-on-complaints-against-john-beckett-20150612-ghmuzn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you shouldn\u2019t have done that, that was wrong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Beckett lied to the boy\u2019s face and denied that anything had ever happened.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also alleged that Beckett <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10690323\/Scots-College-teacher-John-Joseph-Beckett-molested-Projects-Peter-van-Onselen-pictured.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ordered the boys not to wear underwear at night<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it \u201ccuts off the circulation\u201d.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student didn\u2019t report the abuse at the time but reported it to the school in 1998 \u2014 a year before Beckett retired. It is believed this was the second report lodged against Beckett, but the school failed to report the allegations to the police, leading to an onslaught of serious questions about the school\u2019s commitment to the protection of its students.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of 2022, 83-year-old Beckett lives <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10690323\/Scots-College-teacher-John-Joseph-Beckett-molested-Projects-Peter-van-Onselen-pictured.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">close to Scots College and a popular children\u2019s playground near<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coogee Beach.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sydney-grammar-school\"><strong>Sydney Grammar School<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sydney Grammar School is one of the oldest schools in Australia. Its predecessor, Sydney Public Free Grammar school, opened in 1825. The student reported the abuse at the end of the year, and later in court, he said he was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-7514487\/Sydney-Grammar-School-writes-apology-student-17-abused-sex-teacher.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201charassed, stalked and dominated\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Williams.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She had been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-7514487\/Sydney-Grammar-School-writes-apology-student-17-abused-sex-teacher.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned about inappropriate behaviour with students at the school four times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before and had been reminded of the school\u2019s child protection policy. This was before she met the student involved in this case \u2014 she had even been reprimanded for developing an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-7514487\/Sydney-Grammar-School-writes-apology-student-17-abused-sex-teacher.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201coverly close pastoral role\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a male student suffering from mental health problems.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, Williams pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual intercourse with a person in her care and was sentenced to at least seven months in jail.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"de-la-salle-revesby-heights\"><strong>De La Salle College Revesby Heights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De La Salle College Revesby Heights is a Catholic systemic college for boys, which was founded in 1960 with support from two local parishes. It was the first Catholic school in Sydney to open with more lay teachers than religious, and the De La Salle Brothers were responsible for the administration of the school until a principal was appointed in 1992.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gospel in the spirit of St John Baptist De La Salle is central to the lives of students, parents and staff members. The tuition ranges from $1,500 to $2,000 per year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A student was repeatedly sexually abused by a religion teacher who lived on the school grounds<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/annie-spratt-_iIGEgaaJ8U-unsplash-Edited.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/annie-spratt-_iIGEgaaJ8U-unsplash-Edited.png\" alt=\"student waiting outside\" class=\"wp-image-10846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/annie-spratt-_iIGEgaaJ8U-unsplash-Edited.png 1600w, https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/annie-spratt-_iIGEgaaJ8U-unsplash-Edited-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/annie-spratt-_iIGEgaaJ8U-unsplash-Edited-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/annie-spratt-_iIGEgaaJ8U-unsplash-Edited-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/annie-spratt-_iIGEgaaJ8U-unsplash-Edited-1536x1152.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/_iIGEgaaJ8U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsplash<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former De La Salle College student claims he was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-04-05\/sex-abuse-victims-seek-millions-in-damages-from-private-schools\/7300576\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeatedly sexually abused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when he was in Year 5 and 6 by his religion teacher, Errol Swayne, who lived in a caravan on school grounds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swayne required the boy to visit the school on weekends to do chores. While they were alone, Swayne would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-04-05\/sex-abuse-victims-seek-millions-in-damages-from-private-schools\/7300576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">show the child pornographic films and sexually assault him<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. During school hours, Swayne would also call the child into his office for punishment, where he would indecently and sexually assault the boy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;He would explode in the classroom when sending me out. I bet every student in that class felt that I&#8217;m a goner, I&#8217;m going to go up there, and I&#8217;m going to be punished, so it was a role play on his behalf,\u201d the survivor said.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;So to get up there and then be relieved of any punishment and walk out, you feel protected and powerful and, like, wow. Nothing happened. So I think that was the way that he started the whole process.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few years after abusing the child, Swayne committed suicide.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite struggling with depression for many years, the survivor showed bravery in sharing his story with the Royal Commission. It was then that he found out Swayne had abused other boys.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;After I had given my statement to (Commissioner) McClellan, he let me know that &#8216;the teacher you&#8217;re here about has been made known to us on a number of occasions before&#8217;.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Even though it was quite naive, sometimes you can think you&#8217;re the only person something has happened to, but that&#8217;s not the case, and that&#8217;s where that was confirmed. That other people had already been there and spoken to the Royal Commission about the same person, so that was a bit of an eye-opener too.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survivor is now part of a large class action against various other private schools in Sydney and has said that De La Salle Revesby Heights failed to maintain proper protocols for student-staff interactions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"waverley-college\"><strong>Waverley College<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waverley College is a Catholic school for boys in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Founded in 1903, their mission is to empower boys to realise their academic and personal potential to contribute to society actively. He reported the abuse to the school, but his claims were rejected and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-04-05\/sex-abuse-victims-seek-millions-in-damages-from-private-schools\/7300576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labelled \u201cfalse and dishonest\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the officer was dismissed soon after.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years later, the survivor had a breakdown when his wife came to him with enrolment papers for their son to attend Waverley College. Most reported poor academic performance and learning difficulties following the abuse \u2014 even the high achievers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others experienced unhappiness, distress and anxiety at school. They ended up leaving school early or refusing to engage with educational institutions later in life due to the abuse.
