{"id":9965,"date":"2021-12-17T08:44:21","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T21:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/?post_type=institutions&#038;p=9965"},"modified":"2025-05-07T16:53:51","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T06:53:51","slug":"berry-training-farm","status":"publish","type":"institutions","link":"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/institutions\/berry-training-farm\/","title":{"rendered":"Offending Institution: Berry Training Farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past, we have investigated several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/our-work\/clergy-and-institutional-abuse-claims\/abuse-law-involving-institutions\/new-south-wales-nine-worst-childrens-homes\/#MittagongTrainingSchoolforBoys\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New South Wales children\u2019s homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their improper conduct as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/shameful-abuse-of-nsw-state-wards\/\">physical and sexual abuse of children in state care<\/a>. Among some of the worst offenders, we identified <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/institutions\/daruk-boys-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daruk Boys Home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/institutions\/institution-for-boys-tamworth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamworth Institution for Boys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/institutions\/parramatta-girls-training-school\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parramatta Girls Training School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another house of Hell for state wards was Berry Training Farm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some former inmates recall <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catalogue.nla.gov.au\/Record\/5717091\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recreational time, going to the movies on weekends and learning the dairy trade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, others were not so lucky. Due to poor background checks on staff members, several boys were beaten for the smallest mistakes and were forced to try their luck at escaping Berry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others were sexually abused due to poor supervision and corrupt staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we expose some of the horrors that occurred at Berry Training Farm.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The history of Berry Training Farm<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berry Training Farm was originally a training home for boys between 14 and 18 years old. The Department of Child Welfare established it as part of the Coolangatta Estate in 1934. The home was designed to house state wards and those defined as intellectually disabled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berry Training Farm was a \u201clast resort\u201d for unwanted boys with nowhere else to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the mid-1960s, the home underwent a large-scale building program. At the time, two houses accommodated 60 boys who were deemed \u201cincapable\u201d of completing their high school graduation certificates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was also a small internal school for younger boys. According to the 1965 Annual Report of the Child Welfare Department, 40 of these boys were aged between 12 and 15, while the others were \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findandconnect.gov.au\/guide\/nsw\/NE00404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receiving dairy and farm training in preparation for rural placement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The farm closed in 1977 and was replaced with the Berry Sport and Recreation Centre. At Berry, children can stay in a camp environment and participate in sports, games, and other fun activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not how the survivors remember Berry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The children who \u201cmucked up\u201d were \u201coften bashed\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Clarke (pictured above) lived at Berry Training Farm for more than 12 months in the 1950s. Beforehand, he had been living in South Nowra with his parents and his brother Herbert, who had a disability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When John was five or six, his mother died, and the authorities took him from Falls Creek School. Both John and Herbert attended the school. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illawarramercury.com.au\/story\/2629882\/berrys-place-of-fun-once-a-farm-of-fear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John didn\u2019t see his brother again for 32 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He didn\u2019t know where his brother had gone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he was seven, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illawarramercury.com.au\/story\/2629882\/berrys-place-of-fun-once-a-farm-of-fear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John was sexually abused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a man in South Nowra, but no one would believe him or help him. Instead, his father sent him away, and he bounced between institutions like Thornbury Lodge and Yarra Bay in Sydney, Woodford in the Blue Mountains and Berry Training Farm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to the Illawarra Mercury, John said Berry was a tough, disciplined home where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illawarramercury.com.au\/story\/2629882\/berrys-place-of-fun-once-a-farm-of-fear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children who \u201cmucked up\u201d were \u201coften bashed\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt never happened to me but I know a number of the boys were,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was about 11 or 12 at the time. There was no love or affection. There were probably about 100 odd kids here at the time. We all slept in a big dormitory, probably about 30 of us.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He recalled that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illawarramercury.com.au\/story\/2629882\/berrys-place-of-fun-once-a-farm-of-fear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some of the boys tried to run away from the farm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and swam across Broughton Creek but there were always Berry staff members waiting for them on the other side.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was like we were criminals but we weren\u2019t. In my case, I just didn\u2019t have anybody else to look after me.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he was 17, John engaged with The Salvation Army and found faith in God. He ended up having a better life with his wife and children. It was when his granddaughter went away to camp that Berry Training Farm re-emerged in his memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe started describing the place she went to for the camp and I knew exactly where she was. She was at the boys\u2019 farm, where I had been. I freaked out.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When John visited the farm with journalists from the Illawarra Mercury, John remembered looking after cows on the farm and spending time in the cattle shed. John was brought to tears seeing how the old buildings and facilities had changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt looks the same but has been modernised,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was a horrible experience but it made me a better parent. I remember walking out of here all those years ago and it wasn\u2019t a happy place. I\u2019m so glad to be able to see it now with children here having fun enjoying themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt makes me feel good. It is now a happy place. Seeing that is worth a million dollars. I can walk out of here happy. Being a child is supposed to be the best time of your life. I missed all that.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKids are supposed to be happy. Coming back was confronting and upsetting but worth it.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Residents would sexually abuse each other due to low supervision<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a submission to the Senate Inquiry into Children in Institutional Care, a survivor named Wayne Isles described <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/~\/media\/wopapub\/senate\/committee\/clac_ctte\/completed_inquiries\/2004_07\/inst_care\/submissions\/sub318_pdf.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a horrific attack at Berry Training Farm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wayne was placed in a number of institutions between the ages of four and 16. He spent time in Yasmar Boys Shelter in Ashfield, Toombong Special Central School, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/institutions\/mittagong-training-school-for-boys\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mittagong Training School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Royleston Boys\u2019 Home and multiple psychiatric hospitals. He attempted suicide at the age of nine after he and his sister were sexually abused by their stepfather.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his submission to the inquiry, he said that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/~\/media\/wopapub\/senate\/committee\/clac_ctte\/completed_inquiries\/2004_07\/inst_care\/submissions\/sub318_pdf.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he was sexually assaulted by a group of other boys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Berry Training School in 1971. He had been cornered in a hay shed near Broughton Creek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wayne told the Inquiry that he didn\u2019t believe there was enough supervision of the boys at Berry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sadistic housemaster beat the boys, claimed to have a medical degree<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A series of statements from 1965 revealed that one of the housemasters, <a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/paedophile_offenders\/captain-lawrence-wilson\/\">Lawrence Wilson<\/a>, had an \u201cimmature\u201d way of handling the boys at Berry and was prone to beating them for petty offences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one of the statements, an inmate was found crying on the verandah and complained that Wilson had hit him twice across the head. The boy was in the kitchen washing pots and pans when the chef called out to him. As the boy walked across the kitchen, Wilson allegedly said he was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childabuseroyalcommission.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/STAT.0120.002.0053_R.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201csick and tired\u201d of the boy \u201cmucking about\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and struck him across the head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several witnesses corroborated the boy\u2019s story but Wilson claimed he had only pushed the boy towards the sink and that he didn\u2019t \u201cofficially strike him\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The superintendent also defended Wilson, stating that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childabuseroyalcommission.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/STAT.0120.002.0053_R.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the boy was a \u201cweak individual prone to bursting into tears at the slightest provocation\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He wrote that \u201cthere is a possibility that the allegations were made to save face with the other inmates\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As in many state-run institutions, the boys were not believed when they complained about the abuse. Luckily for the boys at Berry, however, Wilson was still severely reprimanded for the abuse and he immediately resigned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another statement, the superintendent said he had an \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childabuseroyalcommission.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/NSW.COMS.514.001.0034.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uneasy feeling that Mr Wilson is a little odd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Shortly after arriving at Berry Training Farm, Wilson lied to the superintendent that he was a third-year medical student but had a breakdown during a supposed \u201cbrain surgery\u201d and \u201cdecided to have a rest from it\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Wilson later confessed that he didn\u2019t go to any university and simply worked as a nurse at the Parramatta \u201cMental\u201d Hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said he had experienced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childabuseroyalcommission.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/NSW.COMS.514.001.0034.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using \u201cthe machines they clamp on the patient\u2019s head\u201d.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is uncertain whether Wilson provided any kind of medical care at Berry Training Farm, but it is clear he should not have been allowed to administer medical treatment \u2014 and he should never have been allowed near children.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Wilson\u2019s file said he was \u201ca fit and proper person\u201d after Berry\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After leaving Berry, Wilson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vgls.vic.gov.au\/client\/en_AU\/search\/asset\/1282129\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">applied to work at Gill Memorial Home in 1971 and Bexley Boys\u2019 Home in 1973<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His application included a report from the Department of Child Welfare that recommended his acceptance at the institutions, claiming he had \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vgls.vic.gov.au\/client\/en_AU\/search\/asset\/1282129\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">years of experience with boys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d having worked at Berry Training Farm, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/institutions\/daruk-boys-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daruk Boys Home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Riverview Boys\u2019 Home, Indooroopilly Boys\u2019 Home and the Yasmar Shelter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the report didn\u2019t mention was Wilson\u2019s personnel file that recommended that Wilson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vgls.vic.gov.au\/client\/en_AU\/search\/asset\/1282129\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should not be employed<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after violent episodes towards the boys at Berry. Despite this, Wilson was granted licences to work at Gill and Bexley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Royal Commission, it was found that Wilson had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vgls.vic.gov.au\/client\/en_AU\/search\/asset\/1282129\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexually abused 17 boys at Riverview, Indooroopilly and Gill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 1950s and 60s. There were also reports that he used \u201cunnecessary force\u201d with the boys in his care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From historical statements and the investigation conducted by the Royal Commission, it is clear that Berry Training Farm \u2014 among many other state-run institutions \u2014 did not complete proper background checks on their staff members and volunteers.
