Australian Air Force (RAAF) has a proud history of immediate and responsive military service, protecting the nation from the sky.<\/p><p>With over 18,000 cadets and 18 RAAF bases Australia-wide, the Air Force consider themselves swift, decisive, resilient and respected.<\/p><p>However, there\u2019s a dark culture of bullying, harassment and sexual abuse plaguing the Australian Defence Force. The Air Force is part of the problem.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19d9bc8b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"19d9bc8b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Dark Culture of Abuse in The ADF<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93471b8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-toggle\" data-id=\"93471b8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"toggle.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1541\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1541\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened\"><i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fas fa-caret-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-toggle-title\" tabindex=\"0\">The case of \u201cCJF\u201d and senior instructor abuse of the non-fraternisation policy<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1541\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1541\"><p>A \u201cnon-fraternisation\u201d policy was placed to prevent cadets and Air Force personnel from interacting with each other in an unprofessional manner. The Royal Commission heard the policy wasn\u2019t taken seriously and considered a \u201cjoke\u201d to cadets \u2013 encouraging off-limits sexual activities and\u00a0institutional abuse\u00a0to occur.<\/p><p>A witness known as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/adf-cadet-rules-treated-as-a-joke-royal-commission-into-child-sex-abuse-20160627-gptcd7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CJF told the Royal Commission cadets weren\u2019t allowed to touch each other<\/a>\u00a0and had to keep a \u201cblue book\u201d distance.<\/p><p>\u201cWe had to maintain blue book distance. We would hit each other with a book because that was maintaining blue book distance,\u201d she said.<\/p><p>CJF joined the Air Force in 1999 when she was just 13-years-old. She told the Commission her adult superiors didn\u2019t follow the non-fraternisation policy and when she was 17-years-old, she had a sexual relationship with one of her navy cadet instructors.<\/p><p>Later, CJF reported the cadet instructor but he wasn\u2019t spoken to and he continued to have sexual relationships with underage victims.<\/p><p>The non-fraternisation policy wasn\u2019t strictly enforced by the Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC). However, the rule was used on multiple occasions to humiliate and manipulate young cadets.\u00a0<\/p><p>In the case of Eleanore Tibble, the impact of non-fraternisation policy caused her to commit suicide.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1542\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1542\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened\"><i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fas fa-caret-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-toggle-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Eleanore Tribble threatened, bullied, and humiliated into suicide<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1542\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1542\">Eleanore was 15-years-old when she entered an inappropriate relationship with an instructor. The Royal Commission heard that in the events leading up to her death, Eleanore was questioned by superiors about the relationship and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/national-affairs\/in-depth\/royal-commission\/mothers-sense-of-justice-from-adf-abuse-finding\/news-story\/6e03d33484d0a5d3ab7e89458b1025f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told Eleanore the relationship was \u201cimproper\u201d while threatening to tell her mother<\/a>.\n\nThe Royal Air Force told her to resign or she would be dishonourably discharged.\n\nEleanore wasn\u2019t told the Air Force had abandoned the plan to discharge her before she committed suicide. She died feeling shamed, humiliated, and alone.\n\nIn 2017, Eleanore\u2019s mother achieved justice for her daughter. The Royal Commission concluded that \u201cat no point should blame be placed on a cadet when an adult instructor or officer engages in a relationship with the cadet.\u201d\n\nThere has never been a better time to seek compensation for the lifetime of suffering caused by abuse in the Australian Defence Force.
