It was meant to be the answer to hundreds of children being abandoned by their families \u2013 whether it be because of substance abuse, or being left behind as they went to make their money in the gold rush.<\/p>\n<p>The orphanage was a place of&nbsp;manual labour, harsh penalties for minor infractions, and&nbsp;abuse in all its forms.<\/p>\n<p>There are several instances of abuse that occurred in the home \u2013 whether it was nuns being physically and verbally abusive to Christian Brothers being sexually abusive.<\/p>\n<p>The way the orphanage was managed meant children were treated as inmates, not the disadvantaged children they were.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/entertainment\/books\/hidden-orphanage-lives-20041020-gdyu23.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Siblings who were brought to the institution were separated<\/a>, an incredibly harsh thing to do considering the families were often from broken families, or families suffering from poverty or substance abuse. To separate the families after they had already experienced so much pain and suffering was a cruel way to introduce them to life within an institution.<\/p>\n<p>There have been&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2017-02-16\/catholic-schools-with-highest-number-of-child-sex-abuse-claims\/8277360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">114 claims of child sexual abuse made against the staff working at St Vincent de Paul\u2019s orphanage in Melbourne.<\/a>&nbsp;There are likely to be hundreds more cases which haven\u2019t been formally claimed. This is an absolutely horrific statistic.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>114 children were sexually abused in the place they were meant to call home<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To say this is a great injustice is an understatement. Every child deserves to be safe and happy in their home environment. At the barest minimum, every child deserves not to be abused.<\/p>\n<p>These children were often moved from home to home, experiencing cruel treatment and abuse no matter where they went.
