{"id":1766,"date":"2017-08-08T13:47:11","date_gmt":"2017-08-08T03:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/?post_type=newsitem&#038;p=1766"},"modified":"2024-05-30T16:15:40","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T06:15:40","slug":"abuse-within-australian-armed-forces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/abuse-within-australian-armed-forces\/","title":{"rendered":"Abuse within the Australian Armed Forces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a long history of sexual and physical abuse in the Australian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<p>The Child Abuse Royal Commission has heard from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childabuseroyalcommission.gov.au\/case-study\/bfb3bfe0-8b4b-4cc8-923b-00ffff789ff5\/case-study-40,-june-2016,-sydney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">111 people with plausible stories of abuse in the armed forces<\/a>. These victims were all under 18 years old when they were abused.<\/p>\n<p>Many adults were also abused in the military since the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Commission heard from victims in the Navy at HMAS Leeuwin in Perth, Balcombe Army Apprentice School in Victoria and the ADF cadets. These locations were those which oversaw underage cadets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/2016\/06\/21\/inquiry-hears-vicious-navy-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Recruits were told to \u2018toughen up\u2019 and were threatened if they \u2018ratted\u2019 on the perpetrators.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Australian Defence Force is facing hundreds of claims from ex-personnel alleging gang rape, sexual harassment and verbal abuse. The oldest claim handled by the ADF dates back to 1963. The ADF is trying to handle all claims quickly and sensitively.<\/p>\n<p>The ADF has a long-standing culture of hazing and harassment in the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/crossing-the-line-why-the-royal-commission-examined-initiation-rituals-and-defence-abuse-61568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">name of initiation and mateship<\/a>.
