{"id":5980,"date":"2019-09-10T13:01:29","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T03:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/new-kelsos\/?p=5980"},"modified":"2024-11-28T13:31:28","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T02:31:28","slug":"st-josephs-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kelsolawyers.com\/au\/st-josephs-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Offending Institution: St Joseph\u2019s Home, Neerkol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The orphanage was established in 1885 to accommodate children transferred from St Joseph\u2019s Orphanage in Bucasia, Queensland. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managed by the Sisters of Mercy, with priests provided by the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findandconnect.gov.au\/guide\/qld\/QE00151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4,000 boys and girls lived at the Neerkol location over their century of operation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including hundreds of migrants from Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1998, Former Queensland Governor Leneen Forde launched an inquiry into instances of abuse at Neerkol. The inquiry revealed the nightmarish living conditions at Neerkol and the harsh punishments handed down by the nuns over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/full-horror-of-neerkol-revealed-at-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">64 former residents and staff members gave evidence at the Forde Inquiry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delved deeper into the abuse at Neerkol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/full-horror-of-neerkol-revealed-at-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13 former residents in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s gave evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the Sisters of Mercy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not a single survivor was able to contain their tears as they recounted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/full-horror-of-neerkol-revealed-at-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">horrendous instances of abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including but not limited to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public floggings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starvation and withholding food\/water<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raping &amp; sodomising the children<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking on children in high heels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beating a boy\u2019s genitals with a ruler while telling him his penis was &#8220;the devil&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forcing bed-wetters to stand in the dining room with their urine-soaked sheets draped over their heads while the other children ate breakfast<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-04-16\/former-neerkol-resident-received-a-bullet-in-the-mail\/6396228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forcing boxing matches between girls and boys for the nuns&#8217; entertainment<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/news\/queensland\/abuse-at-the-sisters-of-mercyrun-neerkol-orphanage-has-shocked-a-royal-commission\/news-story\/4358c246e9a899b4d2006f869c4e02d8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using a cat o\u2019 nine tails to horse-whip runaway boys<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-04-15\/child-sex-abuse-inquiry-witness-forced-to-drink-own-urine\/6393446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forcing children to drink their own urine for hydration\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The nuns started breaking the children\u2019s spirits upon arrival<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siblings were separated, and their possessions and comforts were removed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The children were known as numbers or exclusively by their surname.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birthdays weren\u2019t recognised, except for children who were favoured by the paedophile priests who served at the orphanage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/news\/queensland\/abuse-at-the-sisters-of-mercyrun-neerkol-orphanage-has-shocked-a-royal-commission\/news-story\/4358c246e9a899b4d2006f869c4e02d8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Owen arrived at Neerkol in 1939 at the age of five months old<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout his childhood, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/news\/queensland\/abuse-at-the-sisters-of-mercyrun-neerkol-orphanage-has-shocked-a-royal-commission\/news-story\/4358c246e9a899b4d2006f869c4e02d8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David &#8211; known to the nuns and priests as \u201cnumber 34\u201d &#8211; was repeatedly and viciously raped by Father John Anderson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The sisters would escort David to Anderson, knowing David would be sexually, physically and emotionally abused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anderson told David he needed to improve his Latin. He would be escorted to the presbytery for private lessons, but instead, he would be sodomised by Anderson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If David refused to see Father Anderson or reported the abuse, he would be savagely beaten by the nuns, who accused him of lying: \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-04-16\/former-neerkol-resident-received-a-bullet-in-the-mail\/6396228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you filthy animal, how dare you speak about a priest like that!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David was also an altar boy and was required to assist Father Anderson when he performed mass in outlying parishes once a month. On these trips, Father Anderson would abuse David.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When David was 15 years old, he started working for Mr Hanrahan, a local farmer. However, David was still being abused by Father Anderson, and on one occasion, he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/full-horror-of-neerkol-revealed-at-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">began bleeding from the backside.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Hanrahan asked what had happened, and David told him about Father Anderson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Hanrahan took David to the Child Welfare Department and met with Mr Paterson, the local welfare officer who David knew from Neerkol. Mr Hanrahan told Mr Paterson he didn\u2019t want David working at his farm because he had an 8-year-old son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David told Mr Paterson about the abuse, and he became furious. He drove David back to Neerkol &#8211; Mr Paterson had spoken to David about the bleeding in the past and told David not to tell anyone about the abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe told me I was a good worker but I couldn&#8217;t go out to service until I stopped bleeding from the backside,\u201d David said.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/full-horror-of-neerkol-revealed-at-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said that he knew Father Anderson was abusing me but I wasn&#8217;t to tell anyone, and that if I was caught bleeding I was to say that it was piles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Paterson had also told David he needed to wait until he had stopped bleeding before he could go out to service from Neerkol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Paterson was a friend of Father Anderson, and David recalls two men dining together in the presbytery when Mr Paterson came to complete is required visits.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1990s, David reported the abuse to the police. Around this time, David received <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-04-16\/former-neerkol-resident-received-a-bullet-in-the-mail\/6396228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anonymous, threatening phone calls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also received a bullet in his mailbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>By the time the Forde Inquiry &amp; Royal Commission came around, very few of the nuns, priests and staff members were alive to face their punishment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.australia247.info\/assets\/uploads\/47fab95e20eb8820fa91451335b2a1a0_-queensland-rockhampton-regional-kabra-st-josephs-orphanage-memorialhtml.jpg\" alt=\"St Joseph's Orphanage Memorial - Power Station Rd, Kabra QLD 4702, Australia\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father Reg Durham was imprisoned for a few months in the 1990s before he died. Groundskeeper Kevin Baker was charged with dozens of child abuse offences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/full-horror-of-neerkol-revealed-at-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Diocese and the Sisters of Mercy settled a compensation claim made by 72 former residents with a $790,910 payout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; but many survivors say it\u2019s not enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survivors of Neerkol have suffered life-long conditions and mental health problems, including but not limited to illiteracy, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, rotted teeth, deafness from being hit over the ears, and the inability to form intimate relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo amount of money can ever give my back my childhood, my loss of confidence, my lack of formal education, dignity, self-esteem or self-worth,\u201d one of the survivors said.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least one former resident, 62-year-old Diane Carpenter, has found some solace from the investigation into Neerkol.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel as though through the royal commission that I am finally being heard after this process has taken over 20 years,\u201d Diane said.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI realise I can&#8217;t change history but want to prevent similar things happening in the future. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/full-horror-of-neerkol-revealed-at-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children desperately need to be protected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St Joseph\u2019s Home in Neerkol was allowed to operate for 93 years. Thousands of children passed through the orphanage. Many never learned to read or write; many were starved and tortured.
