Newcastle survivor says a damning report on Archbishop Philip Wilson was \u201cvindication\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n

Peter Creigh, a survivor of child sexual abuse in the Newcastle Diocese<\/a>, has achieved \u201cvindication\u201d after a highly critical report of f<\/span>o<\/span>rmer Archbishop Philip Wilson<\/span> was released in September 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

The report had been confidential for five years prior to its release.<\/span><\/p>\n

The report from Commissioner Margaret Cunneen tears down Wilson\u2019s handling of child sex abuse<\/a> allegations against Hunter Priests <\/span>Denis McAlinden<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Jim Fletcher<\/span>, who abused Mr Creigh when he was a boy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Creigh claims he told Wilson about Fletcher\u2019s abuse in 1976. Wilson did not report the abuse and during Royal Commission proceedings, Wilson claimed he had no recollection of talking to Mr Creigh about Fletcher. In fact, he denied having any knowledge about Fletcher\u2019s abusive behaviour until Fletcher\u2019s arrest in 2003.<\/span><\/p>\n

In March 2015, Wilson was charged with concealing child sexual abuse and Fletcher\u2019s crimes. <\/span>The conviction was overruled in December 2018 by Newcastle District Court Judge Roy Ellis<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Commissioner Cunneen said Wilson\u2019s evidence was <\/span>\u201cimprobable\u201d, \u201cimplausible\u201d and \u201cunsatisfactory\u201d, while also adding he had \u201cfailed as a moral leader\u201d by not reporting allegations against McAlinden in 1987.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

This is the first time Mr Creigh has spoken out about Wilson\u2019s case in the media.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Creigh said he was \u201cgutted\u201d when Wilson\u2019s conviction was overruled but felt \u201cvindication\u201d when the report was released because it showed Wilson was <\/span>“a man who knew a lot more than we imagined” about child sex allegations<\/span><\/a>, especially against McAlinden.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It wasn’t me taking on the church because it was the state prosecuting Wilson, but I took it personally,” Mr Creigh said regarding the overruling in 2018.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

“That’s why I put my name to it. <\/span>I wanted people to know who I was, and to give courage to other victims to come forward. It was a very low, disappointing time<\/span><\/a>. I don’t think I’ve got over it. In fact, I know I haven’t. I still think about it constantly and try not to beat myself up over it.”<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Wilson is currently being treated for bowel cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Catholic Church admits to moving Victor Higgs after allegations of abuse\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Catholic Church has <\/span>admitted to moving<\/span><\/a> former <\/span>Jesuit Brother Victor Higgs<\/span><\/a> from Saint Ignatius’ College in Adelaide to the sister school in Sydney.<\/span><\/p>\n

Higgs worked at Saint Ignatius\u2019 College in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. He would use his position of power to abuse the students, taking them to his office to \u201ctalk\u201d or provide \u201csexual education\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was moved from Adelaide to Riverview to be the boarding master. He would invite the Riverview Boys to his office and force them to undress or perform sexual acts.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2016, Higgs was found guilty of two counts of indecent assault against two students at Saint Ignatius’ College between 1968 and 1970. In 2018, he was found guilty of an additional 16 offences committed at Riverview between 1971 and 1981.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Former Victorian Chief Justice Marilyn Warren was appointed to undertake an independent review of the Catholic Church\u2019s dealing of Victor Higgs in 2018.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In December 2019, Australian Jesuit Provincial Father Brian McCoy announced the findings and confirmed Higgs was moved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with much sadness and contrition that I acknowledge and apologise for our failings with respect to these events some 50 years ago,\u201d Father McCoy said.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Australian paedophiles are paying as little as $15 for online child abuse\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Australian federal police team in Manila have noticed an <\/span>\u201calarming shift\u201d from more common \u201csex tourism\u201d towards \u201cconvenient and low risk\u201d online child abuse of children in the Philippines<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to senior officer Andrew Perkins, Australian paedophiles are paying <\/span>as little as $15 for children to perform sexual acts online<\/span><\/a> via pay-per-view. Due to the similar time zones between Australia and the Philippines, poor children from struggling families can stream sexual acts live.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sexual acts can also be customised to meet the viewer\u2019s demands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perkins said Australian paedophiles have paid between $15 to $500 to access the streams. The price varies based on factors like the <\/span>age of the victim, the number of victims, the number of viewers, and the nature of the abuse<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnline child sexual exploitation is one of the most alarming forms of human trafficking in the Philippines,\u201d Perkins said.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cCombating child exploitation within Australia and offshore is a key priority for the Australian federal police.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cProviding the required proof or probable cause for authorities overseas to action intelligence provided by law enforcement is often difficult.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The investigation is time-consuming and complicated. Paedophiles can protect their identities via encryptions and often don\u2019t download or store the videos, so there\u2019s often no hard evidence on Australian soil.<\/span><\/p>\n

Peter Gerard Scully (known as \u201cAustralia\u2019s worst paedophile\u201d) ran an online child abuse ring in the Philippines. In 2018, <\/span>he was found guilty of one count of human trafficking and five counts of rape<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
