PM Turnbull commits to $4.3 billion national redress scheme payments
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has committed to a multi-billion-dollar redress scheme payments proposed by the Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse.
Turnbull’s commitment came during a private meeting with a group of child abuse survivors just one day following Senate calls for a ‘meaningful commitment’ to the proposal.
The $4.3-billion in national redress scheme payments would implement an independent body with the power to order offending institutions to apologise, pay compensation and help with the medical expenses of child abuse victims.
NSW foster care centres face widespread shutdowns
NSW’s controversial foster care centres face shutdowns after Family and Community Services Minister Brad Hazzard announced a range of urgent measures to improve the State’s dysfunctional foster care centres.
Minimum professional standards for carers along with mandatory training are among the new measures, and non-profit centres will also be subject to new mandatory benchmarks.
Hazzard also warned that centres that don’t comply with the new measures will be shut down.
Paedophile priest John Joseph Farrell adds insult to injury
Convicted paedophile priest John Joseph Farrell not only expressed no regret for his crimes but also told a bishop that his victims “enjoyed” the sexual activity.
Former Parramatta bishop Kevin Manning also told the Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse that Farrell asked the Catholic Church for a $25,000 loan while sexual abuse allegations were being made against him.
Farrell was sentenced to prison in May for a string of sexual offences against children.
