It was with great satisfaction that I received the news in March 2023 that the notorious Marist Brother Darcy O’Sullivan, also known as Brother Dominic, has been convicted of further child sex offences in the Newcastle District Court. My firm has represented many of his victims over the years and continues to do so.
Brother Dominic (this was his religious name) was a shocking sexual predator. He was a teacher at Marist Brothers, Hamilton in Newcastle, before later becoming the principal at St Mary’s High School in Casino. He preyed on countless students at these schools for many years.

Brother Dominic was already in jail at the time of his latest conviction; he is presently serving an eight-and-a-half-year jail term for sexual offences committed against 27 students at both Marist Brothers Hamilton and St Mary’s, Casino. As a result of the new conviction, he was sentenced to another year in jail and will not be eligible for release on parole until August 28, 2025.
He may well die behind bars, which is no less than he deserves.
I commend the NSW Police and the DPP for continuing to prosecute these cases; offenders like Brother Dominic are finally being held to account after decades of believing they got away with their crimes. I also commend the bravery of the survivors who continue to come forward in pursuit of justice.
If you suffered abuse from Brother Dominic, or any other religious person or schoolteacher, we want to hear from you. We will fight for you. Click here to share your story.
