Paedophile Enablers: Graeme Lawrence

He was the Anglican Dean of Newcastle.

Now he’s best known for his despicable protection of a network of serial paedophiles in what has become one of the most disturbing cases of child sex abuse in the church’s history.

Graeme Lawrence is a paedophile enabler.

And he is one of many within the Anglican Church.

Lawrence moved from Griffith where he was an Archdeacon in 1984 to eventually become the 13th Anglican Dean of Newcastle. He retired in 2008.

Tellingly, it was several years after Lawrence’s retirement when the first allegations started to rise about his role in the chilling cover-up of Father Peter Rushton’s evil sex crimes.

Rushton was accused of sexually abusing hundreds of boys throughout his forty year career.

Bishop Brian Farran came forward in 2010 and alleged Rushton molested boys who served during church services or he “arranged to make it happen”.

One of Rushton’s victims, Paul Gray, recounted in horrifying detail how the priest abused him repeatedly between the ages of 10 and 14.

Rushton allegedly cut Gray’s back with a knife and smeared his blood to “symbolise the blood of Christ”.

The demonically charged paedophile died in 2007 without ever being convicted.

Lawrence conspired to keep Rushton free, enabling him to continue inflicting such unfathomable trauma to hundreds of boys.

Lawrence is one of an accused “gang of three” priests including Bruce Hoare and diocesan registrar Peter Mitchell who are all believed to have covered up Rushton’s sickening crimes.

Lawrence is accused of far more sinister crimes than inaction. Some have alleged Lawrence was part of a series of networks actively supporting Anglican child sex offenders around Australia for decades.

He was also taking calls in the late 1990s on the diocese’s child sexual abuse phone line.

Lawrence has since been accused of grooming and sexually abusing a 16-year-old boy in 1981.

He denied these allegations.

Enablers might not be the perpetrators of the shocking crimes they seek to cover up – but these men hold positions of power with an in-built responsibility to protect the lives and well-being of the victims they so cruelly neglected.

Enablers like Lawrence are allowing these horrendous things to happen to vulnerable people.
